Lightfield .410 Home Defender:
Rubber Buckshot & NOVA-DR

For those who want an alternative to Birdshot or Buckshot loads for home defense, Lightfield has created their Home Defender shotshells. This line includes the .410 NOVA-DR blank and the .410 4-ball Rubber Buckshot load.

The NOVA blanks are exceptionally loud, bright, and produce almost no measurable recoil. The manufacturer compares firing one to setting off a flash-bang grenade. After testing several rounds at an indoor range from short-barreled handguns and defensive shotguns, I’m convinced being on the receiving end of this shell would be a memorable experience. The intention is to allow the shooter to fire a warning shot with a reduced risk of harm to another member of the household.

The 4-ball Rubber Buckshot load is designed to cause pain and frighten an intruder into running away, rather than to wound and incapacitate like metallic shot. Depending on the laws in your state, or the temperament of the shooter, this could be a useful option. The rubber balls grouped so tightly on the target at 6 feet as to produce a single hole. Testing distances were adjusted to 10 and 15 feet, using Birchwood Casey 12” x 18” Silhouette Targets, in order to get clear patterns. This round also produces an exceptionally low level of felt recoil, even in light-weight handguns.

Both of these specialty rounds are marketed as ‘potentially lethal.’ Despite the absence of metallic shot, these are serious rounds that fill a unique niche in the self-defense market.
